Bokashi is a clean and easy way to compost your kitchen waste.
The word Bokashi is japanese for "fermented organic matter."
To do Bokashi composting, you use a microbial innoculant called All Seasons Bokashi to ferment or "pickle" the waste in a closed bin. The organic matter does not change form very much, but it is "pre-digested" during the fermentation. When completed you can bury the resulting product in the garden, where it will enrich the soil and decompose completely in a matter of weeks. You can also put it in a compost pile where it will break down rapidly.
Bokashi composting is fantastic way to make your own fertilizer and turn your kitchen waste into something useful.
One of the greatest advantages of Bokashi Composting is that while the microbes are fermenting the waste, they continually produce a rich liquid called "Bokashi Tea" that you can drain off and use on your garden or kitchen plants (one tablespoon per gallon of water). This is a fantastic fertilizer, loaded with enzymes, minerals, and nutrients that will stimulate new growth, new flowers and tremendous plant and soil health.
Other Benefits of using Bokashi:
- Less Pests. Bokashi Composting is done in a closed bin so there are no flies or rodents to deal with.
- Compost almost anything. With Bokashi, even things that aren't advised for normal composting such as meat, fish, and cheese are OK.
- Keep it in your Kitchen. The closed bin won't smell and when you open it to add waste, the mild odor should be something like apple vinegar.
- Less Trash. As with any method of composting you are reducing the amount of trash you produce and contribute to landfills or processing operations.
- Safer. Unlike normal composting, there is no release of gases like methane, carbon dioxide, ammonia into the atmosphere.Works fast. Take as long as you need to fill your bin with kitchen waste. When you have filled the bokashi bin you let it continue to ferment for 2-3 weeks and then it is ready to be buried or composted.
